While genomics has been the focus of precision medicine for the past decade and produced many important insights, a staggeringly complex blueprint for health has emerged. Global metabolomics provides a surrogate to the phenotype that may help illuminate meaningful associations between metabolites, genes and other influences such as the microbiota and bring about unprecedented understanding of human health.
